Upazila background

The name Thanchi originates from the Marma word ‘Thain Chai’ or ‘place of rest’. It is thought that the place was known as Thain Chai in 1950 or earlier as it was a place where passengers stopped for rest while sailing. Later it became known as Thanchi. It is bounded by ruma and bilaichhari upazilas on the north, arakan state and akaib district on the east and southeast border, ruma and roangchhari upazilas on the east, lama and alikadam upazilas on the west. There are 11 ethnic groups living in this upazila. Places like Saka Hafong, Nafakhum, Tajing Dong, Bara Pathar, Raja Pathar etc. under the upazila are known as tourist attractions.
